  2. QUESTION:
What are the names for natural supplements to use for menopause, hot flashes etc.?

    • ANSWER:
Menopause is the medical term for the end of a woman's menstrual periods. It is a natural part of aging, and occurs when the ovaries stop making hormones called estrogens. This causes estrogen levels to drop, and leads to the end of monthly menstual periods. This usually happens between the ages of 45 and 60, but it can happen earlier. Menopause can also occur when the ovaries are surgically removed or stop functioning for any other reason.

Low estrogen levels are linked to some uncomfortable symptoms in many women. The most common and easy to recognize symptom is hot flashes ÷ sudden intense waves of heat and sweating. Some women find that these hot flashes disrupt their sleep, and others report mood changes. Other symptoms may include irregular periods, vaginal or urinary tract infections, urinary incontinence (leakage of urine or inability to control urine flow), and inflammation of the vagina. Because of the changes in the urinary tract and vagina, some women may have discomfort or pain during sexual intercourse. Many women also notice changes in their skin, digestive tract, and hair during menopause.

      Signs & Symptoms of menopause
      Decreased sex drive

What herbal supplements are best for fibromialgia & chronic fatigue?
I was diagnoised 12 years ago. Since I started going thru menopause (at 42) it seems to have compounded my fibro and fatigue. I have lost all of my energy, I do well to make it thru a day. Life is no longer enjoyable because I am always tired and can not even take care of my responsibilities as a wife and mother. I take an antidepressent and a very good calcium w/mag supplement. Any advice about any other natural supplements I may need to add that will help with the fibro and fatigue?

    • ANSWER:
You need to take two daily multivitamins. It is of my opinion though, that Fibromyalgia is a 'made up' disease. It's not real. It's what doctors diagnose when they don't know what's wrong. Find a better doctor to tell you why you don't have any energy. I bet 100 bucks you have an underlying condition.

Thanks so much, sooooo.... many women are suffering from these symptoms & are ashamed to talk about them.

Your insight/knowledge will be very helpful to ALL women going through this & I will surely pass this information along to my friends & family members!

    • ANSWER:
This is an individual choice for each woman to make, depending on the amount and intensity of her symptoms, her personal health philosophy, and her health risk profile. I am a couple of years past menopause now, and I never considered HRT at all, but that is because I prefer the natural way if at all possible. I don't even take aspirin or cold medicine. However, I have autoimmune thyroid disease, and that requires medication, so I take synthetic thyroid hormones every day. I don't want to, but I can't function without it.

I had a very difficult perimenopause and menopause, and am now considering adding back some bioidentical hormones with a doctor's prescription. I am just tired of feeling old in every way. Many women do not have this experience, and may not need much more than an extra supplement or two along the way.

Because of my experience and my interest in natural health, I built a website that covers many different types of natural remedies for the different symptoms of menopause. I personally found success with over the counter bioidentical progesterone, herbal remedies such as black cohosh, wild yam, motherwort, scullcap and vervain, and high quality vitamins. I had breast cancer at age 15,my mother died from it at age 52 so hormones are not advisable.I have been looking for a natural supplement because the palpatations, nausea and particulrly the hot flashes are driving me insane.I can be totally naked over the A/C vent and sweat still pouring off me and it lasts for 10-30 minutes several times a day.I wake up at night trying to take my skin off cuz it's too hot!GRRRRRR.The lack of sleep and embarrassment from this is making me emotional.I also have daily headaches.I have had SVT and been on ATENOLOL for 20 years so many herbs are dangerous for me.What can I do?????

    • ANSWER:
Of course, using soy will totally kill your thyroid. Not a good option, in my opinion.

Please get a book called "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer" by Dr. John Lee. He talks about natural progesterone use, and how it helps protect against female cancers.

You don't have to stay away from hormones. You need to stay away from estrogen and synthetic hormones! Natural progesterone is the exact hormone that your body makes, so you can use it.

  11. QUESTION:
what treatment for premature ovarian failure/menopause symptoms?
I was diagnosed with POF 2 years ago. Have tried BCP, estrogen/provera and Estratest/prometrium. I want to take a natural supplement instead--have to take something because the hot flashes/lack of libdo/headaches are HORRIBLE (I'm 36). Would a progesterone cream (I've seen them at the health food store) help? Or do I have to have estrogen? I'm going back to the doctor in April, but I'd like some suggestions to try in the meantime. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
. You ARE on the right track; trying to find more info.
Google "premature ovarian failure treatment" or something similar and you'll find LOTs of help. ...NOT necessarily 'cures' but knowledge IS Power. You'll be able to ask your doc intelligent Questions.
      >> http://www.youngwomenshealth.org/pof.html << ; ...
      "How is it treated?
No treatment is available to make the ovaries work properly and improve fertility. Your health professional may prescribe hormone replacement therapy, certain types of antidepressants (such as Prozac or Paxil), or other medications to treat hot flashes and other symptoms. " ...
"...there are treatments that can help some of the symptoms of premature ovarian failure.
Estrogen replacement therapy (ERT), also called hormone replacement therapy (HRT) gives women the estrogen and other hormones their bodies are not making. HRT can help women have regular periods and lower their risk for osteoporosis.
Current research is looking into giving women the hormone testosterone to help prevent bone loss in women with premature ovarian failure. " ..

  13. QUESTION:
how to deal with a womans depression?
im dating a 52 yr old woman who has already gone thru menopause. her moods change from day to day sometimes minute to minute. she will not go to a dr and i have recommended using natural supplements and have offered to pay for them and she refuses. it is driving me nuts. also her grown daughter suffers from depression also. when she gets short with me do i take it or should i tell her shes being a b/@#$%

    • ANSWER:
If she's having that hormonal (and it still could be) emotional breakdown, you're best bet would be to NOT call her names. She'll just get irate. Try to remain calm and tell her to look at her own behavior at that moment and recognize that her emotions are out of control. Remind her that there are treatments that can help her feel better and be happy. Be sure to remind her that if she is prescribed a medication, it in no way means that she's "mentally ill" it's just something to help even her moods. Even though mental illness is a medical condition and not a personality flaw, the stigma is still there. Some people think that if they take medicine because of their "feelings" it makes them defective or some kind of pariah. I think she may be afraid of being seen as a nut case. You have to try to convince her that it is not how you would see it and neither should she.

Any suggestions for dealing with a person with Depression?
My dad has depression or male menopause, he can't take medications for it, but he is taking natural supplements and stuff to calm him. I need suggestions on how to deal with him, because he gets angry so fast (and he's full of self-pity). It's driving me crazy (but of course I don't show it). So how should I talk to him, or approach him? Should I act like I understand what he's feeling or like he's totally normal? Idk, any suggestions?
Well the problem is we can't really get him to admit he has a problem yet. I don't know how to make him see that the way he's actin isn't normal - and that we won't judge him if he admits it.

Should I just tell him straight out? Or show him facts and statistics....?

Let him know that you are there for him
      Dont judge him

I have menstrual or period problems, I can`t afford a gynecologist, I went to one but my medical plan doesn`t pay or cover for all the treatments :( ,and sometimes my period takes more time to come. My period is regular, so I get it every month. I am NOT nor never have been pregnant, I`m unmarried, NO boyfriend, not sexually active. Lately this month my period has taken more time to come, I am worried because it is supposed to come and it hasn`t :( .I feel like if something inside of me is obstructing the flow of my period. I hope that i don`t have any Ovarian cysts inside of me. Sometimes i feel so weak and tired that I feel like if i was going to faint. My sister had problems with her internal parts and with her period too so she had to be intervened and operated, I hope it doesn`t run in the family. I`m worried because when I get a job I can`t afford to miss days of work due to my period problem. I drink Midol and pre-menstrual capsules, plus natural supplements for the female reproductive system and for the natural hormone balance. Sometimes they help. any natural herbs that I can use to relieve pain or so my weakness, tiredness, or dizziness or irritability goes away ?

P.S. please don`t say to have sex, when i get married in the future then i`ll consider it.

    • ANSWER:
Many of us have the same symptoms prior to our periods. It's unpleasant, but perfectly normal.

Be sure to get enough water and natural salts; the electrolytic balance is key. Excercise days before your period will help with cramps when it starts. Try some Advil or Motrin for cramping pain. It's better than Midol. Some women swear by caffeine, others avoid it. Tune into you body to see what it needs. Caffeine can very often help with pain.

Do see a doctor if you feel more discomfort or have consistent fainting. It's the only way to determine if you have cysts.

      Best wishes.

  17. QUESTION:
    Help before I kill someone!!!!?
I'm going to hit the big 50 later this year, I had 2 periods in March and nothing since, so I am guessing that the menopause has kicked in. I thought that I was ready for it after all it's a natural part of life, but now I'm not sure.
Physically all seems OK, but I seem to be going through a personality change, my husband and son don't seem to be able to do anything right, no change there, but now I am always snapping at them, and don't seem to be able to let anything go. I also found myself crying along to a sad country song while driving today, and that's not me.
I'm reluctant to bother the doctor with this, as I'm seeing him a lot with a problem with my knee, and don't want him breaking his back trying to carry my file around. He is also young, male, and not easy to chat to.
Can anyone out there who's been through this offer some words of advice, or share their experience. Do any herbal or natural supplements help, or should I be looking at HRT at sometime?

    • ANSWER:
Hey sweety, I am almost 51. I went threw what you are going threw now when I was about 45. I thought I would kill every one around me before I got threw it all. But they all survived and so did I. Your body is just going threw a few changes right now is all. Think of the good side on all this, not the bad side of it. Talk to your doctor about it and he can give you some medicine that will help you get threw it all. I had hot flashes for 10 years like you would not believe. I thought I was going crazy, well crazier than I was already. Hey it is just life. Kick them heels up and try to make the best of it if you can at all. If you need someone to talk to, email me, be glad to talk to you. Remember, I have been there done that.

I also highly recommend Dr Richard Schulze female or female plus. Go to the link below and read about both of them. Be sure to click all the orange tabs at the top when the popup shows (how it works why you need it etc)

He has the best herbal products on the market in my opinion

      https://www.herbdoc.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=17&Itemid=38&cid=15

More about the female formula is found here.

      http://curezone.com/schulze/handbook/female.asp

I also answered your question on black cohosh.

If you want to make your own female formla that is sold on herbdoc.com, using the directions for making a tincture in the other question you asked on black cohosh, I looked up the proportions to his formula that I have from his manual in my documents

You could make less by cutting this down proportionally (ie-2 to 16 wild yam/chate berries, 1 to 4 oz licorice, .75 to 3 oz damiana and .37 to 1 1/2 oz hops)

4 to 16 ounces of wild yam root
4 to 16 ounces of chaste tree berries (vitex angus-castus)
2 to 8 ounces of licorice root
1.5 to 6 ounces of damiana leaf
.75 to 3 ounces of hops whole flowers

He says it will keep 50 years or more if made into a tincture

He says not to buy powders for it but it should be powdered or finally chopped (he recommended a rose cutter to cut it up if you do not have a vitamix

Though not in an easily readable form, he has more on this formula in his chapter 11 (cervical cancer)hold control and f keys to search and type in cervical cancer to find chapter 11 and there he lists the above formula and other info be sure if making it the herbs are organic

I think the female formula and the natural progesterone cream above are all you need if it is stemming from hormones and to help you greatly through menopause.

Though soy has the same chemical makeup as the drug tamoxifin in smaller doses, there are some problems being reported with soy. I would try these first.

  21. QUESTION:
Any good ways to boost metabolism for a middle age female?
I am beginning menopause and having a terrible time losing weight, it's coming off a pound a week but GAWD I'm working for that! Has anyone had any success with a metabolism accelerator actually working? Not looking for a pill to take, more along natural lines of diet or herbal supplements. Thanks!

(I asked this yesterday but only got a few answers, was hoping some fitness people are on today that could help me, appreciate all the advice!)

    • ANSWER:
While exercise and eating 5-6 times a day will help in not only boosting you metabolism and mitigating insulin secretion, drinking water has been proven to be helpful as well.
Despite the fact that most diets call for drinking at least eight, 8-ounce glasses of water a day, few studies have been done to determine if the practice actually speeds weight loss. In an effort to answer this question, Michael Boschmann, MD, and colleagues from Berlin's Franz-Volhard Clinical Research Center tracked energy expenditures among seven men and seven women who were healthy and not overweight.

After drinking approximately 17 ounces of water, the subjects' metabolic rates -- or the rate at which calories are burned -- increased by 30% for both men and women. The increases occurred within 10 minutes of water consumption and reached a maximum after about 30 to 40 minutes.

The study also showed that the increase in metabolic rate differed in men and women. In men, burning more fat fueled the increase in metabolism, whereas in women, an increased breakdown of carbohydrates caused the increase in metabolism seen.

The researchers estimate that over the course of a year, a person who increases his water consumption by 1.5 liters a day would burn an extra 17,400 calories, for a weight loss of approximately five pounds. They note that up to 40% of the increase in calorie burning is caused by the body's attempt to heat the ingested water. The findings are reported in the December issue of The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.
You must maintain a healthy lower calorie diet.Eat less carbohydrates and more whole foods and protein.Protein is helpful because it's the highest thermic food.

Going for a walk in the evening can be helpful but weight training is one of the best exercises you can do to lose weight.

One of the ways this works is by stimulating new muscle growth thus metabolizing more calories even at rest(about 50 cal per pound of muscle).
The fact of the matter is you MUST just stick with it.Following some of the guidelines here will help.
It is also unnecessary to drink 8 8 ounce glasses of water per day.

Calculate you BMR and consume less calories than you burn.

Consider some low carb protein bars.Stay away from granola and those type snacks.
This will dispel that stupid cabbage nonsense among other things. This is excerpted from a Yahoo! Health e mail.
The following diet myths come up over and over again at my nutrition center. My next two blog entries will help set the record straight. Hope you find this helpful!

If you eat late at night, the food turns straight into fat.

Not true.If your overall calories are appropriate for weight loss, you certainly can eat something after dinner. Late night calories will ultimately get used the next day (and even while you sleep).

However, for the sake of energy, it is always better to eat your calories during the day when your body needs the fuel. Plus, eating consistently throughout the day will stabilize blood sugar levels -- so you’ll feel energized and experience fewer cravings. If you are going to snack after dinner, I suggest choosing something 250 calories or less.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are more nutritious than frozen.

Not necessarily. Frozen can be a great produce option (just avoid varieties with added salt, sugar, and sauce). Frozen foods are picked in the peak of ripeness, then frozen. You can eat them as you need them -- and most of the nutrients are locked in. On the other hand, fresh fruit and vegetables are typically harvested before they ripen, and can have nutrient variability. Also, the longer fresh produce sits around in your fridge, the less nutrients it will contain.

Bottom line: Buy both fresh and frozen and eat as much as you can.

Cravings are your body's way of telling you it needs something.

This has never been proven. You normally crave what you like to eat (or smell or see someone else eating). Also, hormonal changes are sometimes responsible for food cravings. Ice cream and pickles anyone?

Any type of water is always better than soda.

No. There are a few caloric waters with sexy marketing ploys. In fact, some brands have quite a bit of sugar. Always check labels.

Certain foods, like grapefruit, celery, or cabbage soup can burn fat and make you lose weight.

These are anecdotal stories that have no scientific back up. It’s true these foods are low in calories, but they do NOT actually burn fat

The combination of caffeine and aspirin before a work out will help to mobilize fat into your blood stream for use as fuel. Most herbal products with the exeption of ephedra do nothing for your metabolism.Ephedra has been banned by the FDA once again.
Things like guarana and gotu kola only speed metabolism because of the caffeine they contain.Dehydroepiandrosterone(DHEA) may help people above the age of 35 to regulate their endocrine system

  23. QUESTION:
Question for the WOMEN: Have you or anyone you know gone through menopause? What is the youngest age? Symptoms?
I am 42 yrs old & just recently I have been having hot flashes & night sweats every day/night. I had blood work done & the doctor's office called & said I have anemia, so I looked up the symptoms: http://health.yahoo.com/blood-overview/iron-deficiency-anemia-topic-overview/healthwise--hw166955.html

I bought this menopause supplement, even though I think I am too young to be going through menopause. That helped, but it is kind of expensive, so I was wondering if there was a natural cure for getting rid of hot flashes & night sweats. If it's not menopause what else could be causing these symptoms?

    • ANSWER:
You are pretty young for menopause. However, I am 45 and starting to wonder the same thing myself! If you are upping your iron intake and still having symptoms, go to a natural health store and get some black cohosh. Check with your doctor first, but if he/she approves, take it according to directions. It should stop those annoying problems.
I don't want to be an alarmist, but my husband's doctor told him night sweats can be a symptom of leukemia. He sweats at night, too, but we can't find the reason (I think he just piles on too many blankets).
I can offer a way to help manage the problem, too. They make big, quilted pads to cover your sheet, then if you soak the pad, you just pull it off and replace with a clean one. A lot easier than changing the whole bed in the middle of the night, or sleeping on wet sheets. You can get these very reasonably priced from a Dr. Leonard's or Carol Wright catalog. They have online catalogs, too.
Hope one of my suggestions help. Good luck!
